A few weeks after Asda launched the striped pepper, another UK supermarket has plans to launch a new version of a vegetable that is also unpopular among children: the white cabbage! Although its red counterpart is popular, especially when slow braised with sugar, apples and cranberries, the white cabbage usually makes people remember the smell of over-boiled cabbage in the school canteen, or it is seen as a synonym of depressing soup diets (that generally didn't work!), and these reasons have made demand for it fall by 6% in the last two years. However, all that is about to change thanks to Tesco.
Tesco have given the vegetable an image overhaul with the new "Sweet Summer Cabbage" which has been specially developed to bring out its sweetness and get rid of the bitter taste that is often associated with cabbages. Their hope is to rekindle interest in this traditional British vegetable and even get children to eat it!
